First Course 2016-2017

The first course started as pilot project in Jameston in November 2016.

After only three months our students were able to create their own uniform, with skirts in kente, traditional Ghana design. At the beginning, the girls selected for the project were ten; some have unfortunately had to abandon the course, even though it was completely free. Often in these communities you do not have or cannot have a long-term vision and you cannot invest in your future. Those who abandoned were forced to sell peanuts or other products of little value to contribute to the family budget or even worse, to please the new partners. In despair, many young women, from the adolescent age, are tied to those who can give them a meal a day, becoming submitted and debtors.

During the first year, girls had the opportunity to attend other art & craft courses such as making boxes with local fabrics, creating earrings and bracelets. These activities aim to provide the young women with the best tools to be able to assert themselves in the future.

The girls that were able to complete successfully the course, received 500 Ghana Cedis (local currency) and a manual sewing machine to be able to start their own business.
